Saumastofa OBI
The History
Saumastofa ÖBÍ was established in 1981 when Ingibjörg Hallgrímsdóttir and Björn Guđmundsson gave The Union of Disabled in Iceland their sewing machines and other tools for sewing.
From the beginning the sewing factory has manufactured and sold working clothes, such as jackets, gowns, apron, trousers, overalls for workers in factories, service jobs and clinics. Also quire surplices and confirmation surplices.
Main customers are beauty saloons, bakeries, candy factories, shops, nursing homes, health clinics, hospitals, doctors, dentists, pharmacies, restaurants, hotels, guesthouses and schools.
The sewing factory does also all kind of special products for companies and institutes.
Goal
The main goal of the sewing factory is to create jobs for people with disabilities, temporary training or permanent work. Saumastofa OBI is one of three departments of Vinnustadir OBI (The OBI Work Center), which is owned by The Organization of Disabled in Iceland (OBI). Employees are 12-14 people, most of them disabled.
